Four Simple Ways to Ease the Stress of Moving

With so many changes, it’s no surprise that many people cite moving as one of the most stressful life events. Some stress is normal when preparing for a move, but there are ways you can make the process easier on yourself.

To help navigate the process with ease, here are four stress-reducing strategies that will simplify your move:

  1. Make a To-Do List

Moving into a new home is exciting, but can become overwhelming if you don’t plan in advance. To help manage your time, consider creating a moving timeline in weekly increments. You can break up your move into smaller, more manageable projects that you can tackle on a weekly basis.

You should develop your timeline between 2-3 months prior to your move to give yourself a chance to accomplish each task without overloading yourself on moving day. In your plan, be sure to list all of the tasks you need to accomplish, how long you expect them to take, and who’s responsible for completing each one.

  1. Protect Your Belongings

Packing and transporting valuables is one of the main sources of stress when moving. To ensure the safety of your belongings, make sure to stock up on proper packing supplies, such as sturdy boxes, padding, and wrapping materials. As an additional precaution, you may also want to consider moving insurance or hiring a professional moving team to pack your items for you.

Before moving, you should also look into ways you can protect your belongings with a home warranty and/or homeowners insurance. See if the previous owner is able to transfer their home warranty policy or suggest an insurance policy, and if not, leave yourself enough time to shop around. Having proper coverage in place prior to your move can help you avoid unnecessary stress when you’re trying to settle in.

  1. Purge Your Old Home

A disorganized home can make moving more challenging for you. To avoid the added stress of purging your home while packing, consider decluttering your home in the months leading up to your move. Start with one room or category of items, and decide which you’d like to keep, sell, donate or throw out.

The less clutter you have, the smoother your move will go. By organizing your belongings sooner rather than later, you’ll lower transportation costs, spend less time packing, and save storage space. If you decide to sell your old belongings online or through an estate sale, you could also pocket some extra money to put toward your new place.

  1. Delegate Tasks

Moving can be a hassle, especially if you don’t have anyone to assist you with packing, lifting, and transporting your belongings. To help take some of the burden off your shoulders, don’t be afraid to ask family and friends for help. Assign specific tasks to each individual, and ask far enough in advance so they can clear their schedules.

Unexpected mishaps may occur in the days and weeks leading up to your move, which is why you may also want to enlist the help of a professional moving company. A reliable mover will be available to help you when issues arise and can also assist with packing and transporting your belongings on moving day.

It’s important to remember that stress is a normal part of the moving experience. However, by planning ahead and enlisting the help of others, you can keep your stress in check for a seamless move.
