  1. Rules – Before you hire movers, make sure your new HOA or Landlord welcomes your pets. To avoid fines and additional fees read the fine print. And ask questions to ensure you and your pet will be happy in your new home.
  2. Reduce Stress -Keep a normal routine as your moving day approaches. Begin packing a few weeks early so your pet thinks everything is normal. This will help keep their stress level down. Prepare cats by bringing their carriers out a few a weeks before the move. Don’t pack your pet’s food/water bowls, medication or their favorite toy. These items will be a sense of familiarity for your pet.
  3. Pet Proofing – Be sure to pet-proof your new home. Secure electrical cords, check window screens and remove any poisonous houseplants.
  4. Moving Day Arrangements -You’ll want to have pet sitting arrangements made before your reliable movers arrive. Enlist a friend to keep your pet for the day or pay for a day at the local pet motel. However, if you must keep them with you during the move, find a quiet room. Be sure to leave them with plenty of water and put a sign on the door.
  5. New Territory – Take your pet out on a leash to explore their new territory after you’ve moved in. Show them how to get back to your new home. Take them on walks around your new neighborhood daily, so they become familiar with the smells, sights, and sounds.
  6. Slow Adjustments – Start by allowing your pets to adjust to one room—their “home base.” This room should include their favorite toys, treats, water/food bowls and litter box. When they seem comfortable, gradually introduce them to other rooms in the house, while keeping some doors shut.
  7. New ID Tags – It’s important to have new ID tags made with your updated information. If your pet has an identification microchip, remember to update your contact information in the database.
  8. Finding a New Vet – Finding a new veterinarian in your new area is easy. Your current vet may be able to refer you to a colleague in your area. It’s recommended that you set up an appointment soon after you’ve moved in.
